Who is this guy?

I’m an airline pilot,  photographer,  violin luthier, machinist,  dad, husband,  grandfather, frustrated artist, unknown musician, and famous project starter.

My family has a small violin shop that has evolved into an efficient time and effort eating machine.  This is basically a full time project by itself. I often tear walls out of my house and occasionally put them back.

Please note that project completion is not one of my stronger attributes. That is a main reason that flying is a good career for me, it is something that once you start doing it you have to finish it or  Newtonian physics will finish it for you. And the pay is good but the hours suck.

Most of this is an attempt to illustrate what really can get done when one is gone just about sixty percent of the time. And I might even give you an idea of what happens on the other side of the cockpit door.

If you are looking for information regarding airline or airport security, cockpit security, or anything that might be of even tangential interest to anyone interested in anything regarding security please just ask the TSA or Homeland Security directly.

Additionally, nothing I write is anything other than my personal opinion.  My employer is not mentioned and is irrelevant. Airlines in general (mine included) seem to be more than a little pissy about employees talking to the media, this is the media. I write about aviation, the aviation industry, and what it is like to be in the middle of it, not the company I work for.

  8. Just wanted to say that I quietly did read all of your blog at once and I loved it. I like the way you have of telling stories and showing us the other side of the cockpit door in a candid and spontaneous way. Thank you for sharing this with us the passengers 🙂

    A pilot wannabe.

    (PS: Excuse my English!)

  9. I’ve been a lurker for quite a while now. Just wanted to say that I really look forward to your updates. You provide insight into an area of complete mystery for us common folk, and you do it with such a wonderful sense of humor and style. (I like what the last poster said “candid and spontaneous”)

Thanks for helping my days pass just that much better.

  10. -Hi

I would like to know where your flying career began and when and where you got your private and any advice you have on acquiring each rating.

    Thanks,

I was pretty much born into flying. A partial explanation of the “lucky” thing. My earliest memories of being a pilot are from standing in the seat. My father was a pilot, his closest uncle was a pilot in the WWII Navy, my closest uncle still is a professional pilot (in his eighties), and my mom even took a whack at it before I was born. Aviaiton, and airline flying in particuliar, has changed greatly in three generations. Not all for the better, it used to beat working. There is no cheap or easy way to do it. You might check out some of the airline “ab initio” programs offered in partnership with some state schools.

Thank you, I haven’t contributed much in quite some time, and just realized it was made invisible to searches. This might explain the near total lack of recent comments.
